Towel Dog

Room service was delivered but we couldn’t watch the scenery because there was fog. We were supposed to go on the promenade with our resident naturalist and look at wildlife, but we couldn’t see 12 feet past the ship. She said she’d stay up on the bridge and announce if there was any wildlife that came up close, but I wasn’t counting on it. I noticed that the captain was hauling ass. I’m assuming that he figured that if we can’t see anything, we might as well make time.
There was a polar bear swim in glacier bay scheduled for 10AM. I’m not sure exactly how they are planning on doing that since deck 10 where it’s at is a long way up from the water, but we are going to put on our swimsuits and go.
Out on the promenade we had a bit of excitement. A lady took quite a fall down a metal set of stairs. We had rounded the corner just as she fell. There were a couple of other ladies flapping ineffectually so Wendell took over. As much as we may snicker at Wendell and his take charge attitude, he actually was needed in this situation as the other passengers were not doing anything effective. After assessing the situation from a distance, he started barking orders at the flapping passengers. Then he stepped over and picked up the phone to call the ship 911. Pretty funny that nobody else thought to do that. I have to confess that I did my own going into first aid mode thing. As soon as she fell I noted the time on my watch in case the fall was due to stroke, heart attack or something else that needed a time point. As soon as the ship medical personnel showed up we continued on our walk. By the time we made it back around the promenade deck there was no sign that anything had happened.
The polar bear swim was in the outside unheated swimming pool. They had a glass of glacier bay water, or so they said, that they poured into the pool. Then they added some ice for good measure. We each had to jump in, swim across then get out. It actually wasn’t that bad. Mother didn’t get a good shot so I did it again. We had gathered quite a crowd of observers. Then they said they’d give us more ‘Dam Dollars’ (ship credit you trade in for prizes) if we went a third time, so we went a third time. Wendell decided to ham it up and was floating around in the pool having a relaxing swim. I yelled out that the only reason he could do that was because he had plenty of blubber to keep him warm. We made quite a show of it.
The afternoon was the usual day in paradise. After we got through the fog the captain slowed way down so we could look at the pretty views. We got very close to some glaciers and got to watch them calve.
Wendell got the Friends of Dorothy meeting onto the schedule and we got quite a turnout for it which was nice. I suggested that next time we cruise we should ask on the day we embark and get it scheduled for the afternoon as sometimes the entertainment staff will come to it.
The ship is selling off their Alaska merchandise at a discount. I bought two cute husky puppy stuffed animals for five bucks each. I had left them lying on the bed in our cabin. When the cabin steward came to make up the room, he made a towel dog the same size as mine and lined them up on the bed. It was really cute.
