Hobbit And The Schoolboys
We disembarked at 7am and Hobbit was yawning and grouchy from lack of sleep. We found the bus stop, got a bus ride to the train station, validated our Eurail Passes in Caen and headed to Bayeux. Once we got off the train in Bayeux, we navigated ourselves to Anna's hotel - easier said than done. With an exhausted Hobbit in tow, we proceeded through town at a fast walk.
We were "navigationally challenged" several times and one of them was quite amusing. As I oriented the map to the alley that we were standing in, I glanced in a window of the building next to the sidewalk to see a sign (in several languages) which read, "Tapestry Entrance This Way" - we had navigated ourselves to the building that housed the Bayeux Tapestry.
The hotel was across the street and down about 25 meters.
We checked into the hotel and went across the street to visit the tapestry. Hobbit, stuck in a swarm of annoying schoolboys, stomped out and took to her bed for the remainder of the day.
Wendell Tucks Hobbit Into Bed, Then Tours Normandy
I tucked Hobbit into bed for a nice long nap. I knew that she was exhausted because she was willing to sleep in the hotel room while I went off and toured the Normandy coastline with a 6' tall Australian blonde who was 20 years my junior ...
I rented a car and Anna and I squeezed into it for a self-guided tour of the Normandy Landing Sites. Anna had studied the history of the landing, I was able to add another facet to the history by describing the strategy, technology and tactics used during the beach assault.
We returned that evening to find Hobbit rested, refreshed and in a much better mood. We took her out to a lovely Normandy dinner of galettes and cider.
Rental Car - this wasn't the smallest car they had to rent, either!
