It wouldn't be a Hobbit and Wendell Adventure if we didn't have a sign warning us about the dangerous activities ahead ...
The ski gear is very different than what we use. The boots are hard and the heel unclips to go up. Also you put skins on to go up so you don't slide backwards, but you don't slide forwards either so it's like walking in really uncomfortable boots. No kick glide here. Going down was great, but not going up which usually I don't mind.

We almost made it to St Bernard Hospice. But I got altitude sickness. Pretty bad. We were so close we could almost touch it (but not see as there was fog). But we had to turn back. The furthur down we got, the better I felt. From the parking lot there was only one bus back after a three hour wait so instead of waiting Wendell flagged down a local and got us a ride to a small town so we could sit in the pub. The pub owner was very nice and talked with us in our bad french, then loaned us a deck of cards.
The first three fourths of the route was on a road and really easy, I proabably could have made it if it was like that all the way but the last little bit was a difficult trail, it was foggy and I was going slower and slower and having a hard time breathing and dizzy and headache and according to Wendell was getting stupid. Not great for navigating out in the snow etc. I burst into tears for the lesssee, the third....? Fourth time this trip? Wendell is reworking the itineary so it is not so frantic and will reduce my stress level.

Wendell Updates
We survived our trip up St. Bernard Pass. Hobbit got a bad case of altitude sickness about 1km from the Hospice, so we decided to head back down (we had another km of skiing to go and it would have been very painful for her.)
