Hobbit Waxes Philosophic On Crime
there are pickpockets in Italy and there are pickpockets in Seattle. The difference is that in Seattle if I see a pickpocket going through somebodys pockets I can yell at them and they will run away and I don't fear any reprisals. In Naples the locals cannot do anything because the looser criminals have the power.
So you think that is just Naples.
Well on all the trains across Europe we were told to lock our cabin door when we were asleep. It was only in Italy that we were told not to leave our cabin at night because there are crimanals on the train and if they target one of us, the conductor cannot do anything because they will come after him.
Every place has theves and criminals, the problem with Italy is that the theves and criminals have the power.
Rome is pretty and Gelato is yummy but I can't say I'd ever want to come back to Rome.
Wendell Reports
We did an awesome tour of Rome yesterday - we hiked around to the top of the Spanish Steps. We approached the steps from the top, there is a monument and a wall at the top. Hobbit looked at the monument then the view of the city and said, "This is kind of anticlimactic." I replied, "Why don't we go around this wall here and down these steps and see what the view looks like from the bottom?"

Each Fountain More Ornate Than The Next
Walking Tour Of Rome
We proceeded to walk from fountain to fountain across Rome - each one more ornate than the last. We also visited the Argentium Ruins, which locals have turned into a cat sanctuary. About 250 cats live in the city-block sized area of ruins, it is about 20 feet below street level and surrounded by a wait high wall. We walked all the way around and it looks like the lion pen at the zoo, only someone shrunk the lions. From there we walked to the Colloseum and I got a chance to see what the back of the Colloseum looks like. Hobbit got to see the Arch of Constantine (small in comparison to the Colloseum.)

Hobbit Is Now Bored With Fountains ...

Our room is practically palatial. The bathroom is and experience. Too bad we have to share the bathroom. Oh well. There is this enormous warderobe that they must have put in before they put up the wall because we can't figure out how it got in the room otherwise.
So far I like Rome much better than Nasty Naples. In Nasty Naples I felt like all the loosers that kick up to the wise guys were constantly targeting us. here I feel like people are just going about their day.
Packing the Rick way is great because you haven't got much to carry. I have everything I need for the most part (Wendell carries some of the other stuff) but I don't feel overburdened. I ses so many tourists struggeling to manage big big suitcases as Wendell and I wizz by them with our backpacks strapped to us. The only problem is that we wash clothes just about every night. Sometimes we go to a laundromat. So for example our first morning in Rome we are spending at the laundrymat. So those of you who are thinking 'get of the internet and go see Rome!!' Well I have to wait for my laundry to finish before I can leave. So I might as well internet.
Still, I'd rather Rick pack and do laundry than carry a bunch of stuff.
I did sleep like the dead last night, the bed was really comfortable, so today should be fun.
