Hobbit On Day Two
During the night the winds picked up. The gale force rating system goes like this: 1 gentle breeze (12 sails needed to go), up to gale force 12 (only one sail needed to control the ship, any more would get blown out.) During all of day 2 we ranged from a gale force 8 to 11, hovering around 10 most of the day.
We started our day with a trip to the gym. The gym is small, has all the basics covered (treadmills, cycles, weight machines, free weights) but is located at the bow so it pitches and rolls a lot during high seas. We did a workout and finished with running three laps on the promenade deck, however it was windy and freezing. As we ran by the breakfast room all of the diners were pointing and marveling that we’d be out in that weather.
We had to cut the workout short because of a combo of me being really hungry and the boat motion which was swooping up and down. Gee I wonder why. As the day passed the winds picked up even more and they closed all of the decks due to high winds etc.
We ate breakfast at the buffet, juice, porridge, fresh fruit. We were okay for seasickness but didn’t want to overdo the food just in case.
We dinked around then went into lunch, Greek salad, butternut squash soup, spinach ravioli and 1 scoop vanilla ice cream (my concession to mild seasickness). During lunch we were seated by a window and got to watch as waves came up and over the window.

After Lunch ...
We tried to go to friends of Dorothy, but the Commodore club is high up in the front of the ship and was a real e-ticket ride. It was too much for Wendell and he had to leave for the center of the ship. Our cabin is almost dead center of the ship which means it’s a haven from the worst of the motion.
After lunch I had to put Wendell to bed as his Transderm had not completely taken effect yet.
I went off to see a lecture but the lecturer was seasick and had to cancel. So I went up to the pool on the 13th deck only it was closed. It was only about ½ full and as the boat would rock the water would splash out of the pool in great waves. One poor staff member had the job of squeegee-ing the water off the deck every time it would slosh out of the pools and hot tub. The hot tubs were open so I got in and realized that it was the ticket to a break from seasickness as the water in the tub stayed still, but the tub moved around it. So if you float in the middle with your eyes closed it feels like you are still and your stomach is happy. Unfortunately this lasts only as long as you are in the tub.
Did I mention that I have a sore throat? The Transderm gives you cotton mouth which doesn’t help the sore throat. Also the sore throat wants water but the seasick stomach does not.
At 5PM I rousted Wendell out of the cabin to go to the movie. It was ‘Ms Henderson Presents’ which is not really a Wendell movie, but it keeps our minds off our stomachs. The theatre is alas at the front of the boat (worst place for motion) and Wendell was pale and his eyes were watering so I hustled him back to the center of the ship.
We laid down for a while then got up to dress for dinner which was formal tonight. My black leather tuxedo with tails was a hit with the staff. Dinner: Salad, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes, surf and turf (I gave my turf to Wendell) The lobster was good this time. Desert was a chocolate cake. There’s a guy wandering around with a plate of cookies and candied ginger which I had some of.
Wendell and I were a bit green after dinner so we walked around the center of the ship for a while then went off to bed. Our cabin steward made up our beds so they were together tonight, but Wendell is a cover hog and I had to use the bed spread.
